K&H teacher in Oslo

I spent a year teaching arts and crafts to third graders in Oslo. The experience allowed me to approach creativity from a new perspective and showed how much there is to learn from children’s openness and way of expressing ideas.

Project Overview

I worked for a year as an arts and crafts teacher for a third-grade class at an elementary school in Oslo from 2024 to 2025. We explored various projects connected to the national curriculum goals, using techniques such as drawing, painting, and weaving ect.

In one example shown here, I integrated nature into the lessons by taking the children outdoors to pick berries — in this case, rowan berries — which we later used in our art projects. Through this, I saw how nature can serve as a source of community, mastery, and creative expression.

In another example, we reused sustainable materials, such as cardboard rolls, to create imaginative works. In one project, the students designed their own aliens or spacecrafts, while in others we focused on “Our Plant” — exploring how we can care for the earth and make things in more sustainable ways.

Working as a teacher with a background in design allowed me to express creativity in new ways, and I found there is much to learn from children — especially in how freely and fearlessly they explore creative expression.
